Showing up on Google used to be the whole game. Get ranked, get the call.

That's still true. But it's not the whole story anymore.

A lot of homeowners -- especially younger ones -- skip the search results page entirely now. They ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly: "who's a good HVAC company near Avon?" They get a name back. Sometimes two or three. They call one of them.

If your business isn't set up to show up in those answers, you're not in that conversation at all.

That's what AI search optimization is about.

What Is It?

AI search optimization -- sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO -- is the work of structuring your website so AI tools can understand your business and recommend it by name.

Traditional SEO targets Google's ranking algorithm. AEO targets the language models that are increasingly handling search queries directly -- ChatGPT with web browsing, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews. These tools don't return a list of ten links and let you pick. They generate an answer. The businesses that get cited in those answers are the ones whose content is built for it.

The underlying logic isn't complicated. AI systems favor content that is clear, locally specific, and formatted to answer questions directly. A plumbing company with a well-written FAQ section and proper schema markup is far more likely to get recommended than one with a thin homepage and no structured data. The AI has something to work with.

How Is It Different from Regular SEO?

They target different systems, but the good news is that most of the work overlaps.

Traditional SEO is built around link authority, keyword placement, and technical signals like page speed and mobile usability. The goal is a high position in Google's ranked list of results.

AEO is built around how AI models process information. They don't rank a list -- they synthesize a response. They pull from content they've indexed and generate an answer. The content most likely to be used is direct, structured, and authoritative. Schema markup matters more. FAQ content matters more. Clear entity data -- who you are, what you do, where you operate -- matters more.

For most trades businesses, the right move is to build both at the same time. AEO doesn't replace SEO. It layers on top of it.

Why It Matters for Trades Businesses

Local service queries are one of the most common use cases for AI search. Someone's furnace goes out on a Sunday night -- they're not scrolling through a Google results page. They ask an AI assistant and go with whoever it suggests.

Most trades businesses in Greater Cleveland have no AEO strategy at all. Most have never thought about whether ChatGPT can recommend them. That's actually an opportunity. The bar is low, and the businesses that move first build an advantage that compounds. AI models tend to keep citing sources they've already cited.

The easy way to see where you stand: open ChatGPT or Perplexity and search for your trade in your city. See whose name comes back. If it isn't yours, that's the gap.

What Does It Actually Involve?

A few concrete things:

  • FAQ content written for direct answers. AI systems are trained to look for content that answers specific questions clearly and concisely. Two or three sentences that directly answer "how do I know if my roof needs replacing?" will get cited. A wall of marketing copy won't.

  • FAQPage schema markup. This is structured data added to your site's code that explicitly labels your questions and answers so AI crawlers can parse them without guesswork.

  • Clear entity data. LocalBusiness schema, consistent name/address/phone across directories, and specific service descriptions all help AI tools understand what your business is and where it operates. Vague or inconsistent data makes you harder to recommend confidently.

  • Authority content. Blog posts and long-form content that answer real customer questions build topical authority over time. AI models favor businesses with a documented record of providing accurate, useful information on a subject.

  • Third-party mentions. Local directory listings, trade association pages, local press mentions, and reviews on external sites all signal legitimacy to AI models. It's the AEO equivalent of link building.

Can ChatGPT Actually Recommend My Business?

Yes. ChatGPT with web browsing, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews all surface specific local businesses in response to location-based queries. They pull from your website, your Google Business Profile, directory listings, and third-party mentions.

Businesses with structured websites, active GBPs, strong review counts, and FAQ content consistently show up in AI recommendations. Businesses without those things don't.

How Long Before It Works?

Google AI Overviews index quickly -- a well-structured FAQ page can start appearing in AI Overviews within days to weeks of being published. Perplexity and ChatGPT operate on similar timelines for content they can access.

Building the kind of topical authority that gets your business consistently recommended over competitors takes longer -- three to six months of steady content work. But the foundation pieces (schema, FAQ content, entity cleanup) can produce visible results fast.

Six months from now, the businesses that started today will be well ahead of the ones still thinking about it.

FAQ

What is AI search optimization for contractors?

It's the process of structuring your website so tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews recommend your business by name when homeowners search for local services. It involves FAQ content, schema markup, clear entity data, and authoritative copy that AI systems can parse and cite.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap significantly. SEO targets Google's ranking algorithm. AEO targets the AI language models that answer queries directly. Both require well-structured content and strong local signals -- AEO adds emphasis on direct-answer formatting and schema markup.

Do I need AEO if I already do SEO?

Yes. They serve different channels. SEO gets you on the first page of Google. AEO gets you recommended by AI tools that more and more people are using instead of traditional search. Doing both means you're covered across the main ways homeowners find contractors.

How do I know if ChatGPT is recommending my business?

Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and search for your trade and city -- "roofing company in Avon Ohio" or "HVAC repair near North Ridgeville." See what comes back. If your business isn't there, that's the gap. We check AI visibility as part of our free audit.

None of this matters if Google can't figure out what you do or where you do it. That's the prerequisite, and we wrote about the three fixes that move the needle first.
